The Moroccan solar project (US$9 billion) which aims to transform the desert sun into profitable exports to Europe is in danger because certain international entities will not finance the construction of solar plants planned in the Western Sahara because it is a disputed area.
In 2009 Morocco drew up plans to build solar plants and wind farms to generate 4GW of electricity in 2020, but most of this energy will be generated in the Western Sahara in two plants (500MW and 100MW) and in a third which would be located on the border of the Sahara.
