Jordan aims for energy self-sufficiency by 2020

The Energy Minister Alaa Al Bataineh, stated that energy independence is intended to be achieved through gas projects, oil shale and renewable energy. Jordan imports most of its energy needs and depends on supplies of Egyptian gas to generate 80% of the electricity it produces (3,000 MW), which means an annual energy bill of 4,000 million dollars. Just investments in solar energy in the Ma’an Development Area (MDA) will be around 350 million dollars at the end of this year for the installation of between 150 and 200MW.
